Good to “virtually” make your acquaintance. You picked my three favorites from that list … talk about coincidence! I made my friends go and see Sharon Jones for my birthday a few years back … I’ve been smitten ever since. We also got to see her perform at Hartwood Acres where she debuted at least one, if not two “new” songs that ended up on this most recent album. I can’t recall if you’re in Pittsburgh still, but if so, she’s playing the Byham on Sunday … I’m pretty certain we’ll end up going.

As for Paperboy … I was suspect of him at first … then we saw him at The Hard Rock Cafe in Station Square … what a tough venue! But he was pretty amazing. When it was show time he gave 110% into his performance. And while it’s a “show” … it’s a really good show.

I’ve never had the chance to see The Heavy, and only have heard a few of their songs, but what I’ve heard is great. I’ll definitely check out Liv Warfield … that’s a new name for me.

And it’s still hard to believe the Porky Chedwick passed away … I’d say he was as much a Pittsburgh icon as Myron Cope (different subject matter, but equally legendary).

Thanks again, Jane.

Dana told me about your work and knew I would be thrilled with your appreciation for neo-soul. As someone raise from tot-hood by WAMO’s late, great Daddio of the Raddio Porky Chedwick, how could I not love people like Sharon Jones, Paperboy, and The Heavy (be still my heart, Sam & Dave were my favorites). Glad to know the younger generation is keeping the soul burning, no matter what their motivations. Thanks for the good article. If you haven’t seen Prince’s protege Liv Warfield yet, check this out:

Rock on,
