I have loved this song since I was a kid, and to know the history, well, I find it very sweet. Boy loves girl.. What more could you want? Thanks for this insight. It’s going back into my regular playlist, now with the story.

Jane Heflick kept her mother’s memorabilia after Sloopy passed on. But
the collection was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2006. Jane wanted
to evacuate back to Steubenville, and she sought the aid of the Musicians’ Union. Unfortunately, this would have required a medical-type
evacuation which was more than Jane’s contacts in the Ohio Valley
could do.

I second Dave’s comment: great stuff. Some trivia: when I was a senior in high school, I belonged to the Latin Club (dead Romans, not hot Latinos). Some of the club members translated “Hang on, Sloopy” into Latin and sang it at a competition at St. Vincent College. You haven’t heard anything until you’ve heard that in Latin. In fact, I have the translation in my files (I did not sing in the competition; I and several others stayed in the audience and cheered our chorus on.). I’ll post the words when I find them. And, by the way, I don’t remember who won that night. Kinda think we didn’t, but I don’t recall.
