It captures Asbury Park, Bruce, and this unforgettable song as nothing else I’ve ever read. I mean, seriously, Andrew Marvell? … amazin’ second paragraph!
Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue was performed on the National Mall last night as part of the nation’s Independence Day concert prior to the fireworks hailin’ over the Washington Monument. I consider 4th of July (Asbury Park) to be on a par with that popular work of genius. The only problem is, how could anyone other than the E Street Band ever perform this particular opus properly? It just doesn’t work without that little question mark in Bruce’s voice as he begs, “Love me tonight for I may never see you again …”
Miraculously, the Temple of Knowledge survived Superstorm Sandy, and my vote is for it to be in the Smithsonian before something else happens to it.
